Parks and Gardens of Saint-Petersburg - Moscow Victory Park

One of the parks, located far from city center in Moskovsky district (next to metro station Park Pobedy – the Victory Park), Moscow Victory Park was founded in 1945 and was officially opened in July 7, 1946. It was devoted to the victory in World War II over Nazi Germany. The project of the park was designed in the architectural studio of professor E.Katonin. Thousands Saint Petersburg inhabitants took part in the construction and layout of the Victory park, combining elements of formal and landscape planning, decorated with ponds, canals, avenues, and flower gardens. The Moscow Viktory Park spreads over 68 hectares and features more than 100 species of plants.

The main alley of the park is the Avenue of Heroes, which is lined by bronze statues of people awarded twice with the titles Hero of the Soviet Union and Hero of Socialist Labor. A statue of Marshal Georgiy Zhukov, who commanded the Leningrad Front in the fall of 1941, was unveiled for the 50th anniversary of the victory over Germany. The park is full of reminders of Leningrad's suffering during the war. In front of the park's main pavilion there are two figures: "The Front", by Leonid Razumovsky, and "The Rear", by Nikolai Gorenyshev. In 1986 a cross was erected to the victims of the Second World War on the site of a brick factory in whose ovens the bodies of those who died in the Siege of Leningrad were burned. Being a symbol of Saint Petersburg (Leningrad) heroism and in honour to commemorate the victims of World Wat II, the Moscow Victory Park became the favorite place of recreation for residents and guests of the city.
