Veliky Novgorod (The Grand New City) is one of the most historical Russian cities. It's located 190 km from St.Petersburg, on the bank of the river Volkhov. Despite its name, Novgorod is among the most ancient cities of the East Slavs. The chronicles first mention it in 859; the Novgorod First Chronicle mentions it first under the year 862 when it was already a major station on the trade route from the Baltics to Byzantium.
