Suzdal was an important religious center and at one point of its history had approximately 40 churches while the population of the town was about 400 families. Nowadays, Suzdal is an important tourist center, featuring many examples of old Russian architecture—most of them wooden churches and monasteries. The atmosphere of the city is very pleasant because of its rustic, country feel, with streams and meadows everywhere and livestock a common sight on the streets, some of which remain unpaved.
